"This is the day of the national triumph, of national pride. It is the day of grief and eternal memory. This is a festival that praises the invincible power of patriotism, when all of us feel particularly sharply what it means to be faithful to the Motherland and how important it is to be able to stand for its interests."

Hundreds of troops marched through Red Square, marking the anniversary of Germany's surrender to the Soviet Union in 1945.

State television called it the biggest parade in 20 years.

The showcase of military forces comes amid continuing tensions with Ukraine.

On the streets near the parade route, residents carried their pride on their shoulders and in hand and spoke of patriotism.
