European Union member states should reject Moscow’s “divide and rule” gas pricing tactics, according to the EU Energy Commissioner.

Countries in the bloc pay different prices for Russian gas under bilateral contracts. Common purchases would improve the EU’s negotiation power and probably lower prices.

Energy Commissioner Guenther Oettinger held a press conference with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk on Friday.

Oettinger called for an end to the varying prices Russia charges across Europe in favour of a uniform gas cost.

“We want a unique price for gas in the EU where member states can buy gas for a better price,” he said.

The next step will be a trilateral meeting on Saturday between Russia, Ukraine and the European Union. The discussions in Warsaw will focus on the security of Russian gas supplies to Ukraine and the EU.
