Two inmates were killed in a gas explosion at a Florida prison on Wednesday night, according to The Pensacola News Journal.
Some areas of the Escambia County Jail, which housed about 600 inmates, were flooded after rainstorms ravaged the city of Pensacola for the past two days.
The blast occurred at around 11:00 p.m. and led to the partial collapse of the prison, claiming two lives and injuring more than 100 prisoners and officers.
The uninjured inmates were transferred to other detention centres across the county.
"It took heavy flooding today," said Kathleen Dough-Castro, chief public information officer for the Escambia county. "but we're not sure if that affected what happened here tonight."
Friends and families were frustrated because information was sparse and they had to wait for hours before knowing whether their loved ones were affected by the blast. Rumors about inmates smelling gas fumes before the explosion also flew around, but were not verified or denied by authorities.
