Former Rains County deputy Jerrod Dooley gave tearful interview where he expressed regret over killing Cole Middleton's dog while responding to a burglary call on April 18.
Middleton placed the 911 call at 12:46 p.m. and Dooley arrived at his home at 2:41 p.m. The now former deputy was outside his vehicle when the blue heeler, named Candy, came running toward him barking. He fired two shots at the dog, one of which struck the dog's neck.
Dooley told Middleton that he had to shot his animal, to which Middleton begged him to shoot it again to put it out of its misery. The deputy refused Middleton's request, forcing the distraught owner to drown the dog in a bucket of water.
"I was so upset," Middleton said in an interview with Fox 4 News. "I went over there to her and she was still alive and I begged and pleaded with him to please shoot her again because I don't have any firearms. They got stolen. He went and got in his vehicle and backed out of my driveway."
Dooly has since been fired even though his actions were not considered criminal. Rains County Sheriff David Traylor said firing him was the safest move for the deputy and the department.
