Pictures that circulated around a Chinese Twitter-like social media sight sparked both a rescue mission and an investigation.
The photos showed about a hundred living dogs trapped at the bottom of a large pit.
Along with the images was a plea for help.
Several volunteers banded together and went in search of the location. When they arrived, they learned that sadly, the pictures were real.
They immediately began efforts to save the dogs.
Said one of the rescuer’s, “We first tried buckets and ladders, but nothing worked. Then we tied a knot to make a loop with a rope, dropped the loop into the pit, lured the dogs into the loop with food, and got them out of the pit with the rope."
About 20 were successfully lifted out and the remainder of the mission was handed over to a local shelter.
Unfortunately, by the time they arrived, the hole had been filled with dirt, and only a handful of dogs were running around in the area.
Excavations revealed that 6 had been buried alive, but the others that had been there earlier were not found.
Area officials said they are looking into the matter. Meanwhile Netizens are calling for anti-cruelty laws to be established in China which currently has none.
