An estimated 80% of donated clothing in the United States is used by charitable organizations for donation to the needy, and for funding. An estimated 12 million tons of clothing and textile waste is thrown out in the United States each year. An estimated 90% of clothing and textiles thrown out in the U.S. during 2011 could have been recycled or reused. The textile recycling
industry accounts for an estimated 17,000 jobs throughout the United States. The average American purchases 10 pounds of previously used clothing each year in the United States.
