Several thousand coal miners in southern Poland have protested in Katowice against a decision by their employer to shut down production for a week.

They fear thousands of jobs are at risk.

The country’s largest mining company, Kompania Węglowa (KW), has closed nine of 15 collieries to cut costs, saying there are surplus stocks and it can’t afford to pay staff in full when demand is low.
