There’s no doubt about it – fireworks are beautiful, but they can, under certain circumstances, be dangerous.
A blaze recently broke out in the town of Cullera, Valencia due to a firework display that quickly got out of hand. At a little after 11 on a Saturday night, a spent firework landed on a nearby hillside.
Almost immediately, the dry land caught on fire and it didn’t take long for the flames to spread. Due to high winds, the entire hill ignited before the 14 minute long firework show had come to an end.
Numerous local homes had to be evacuated. Firefighters from eight divisions responded to the hillside to get the blaze under control.
It took nearly three hours to douse the flames, but the crews were able to successfully tackle the inferno. The firework display is an important event in Cullera, as neighboring communities strive to put on the best show.
However, the mayor of Cullera is now under some scrutiny because the fire department had faxed him a note earlier on Saturday warning him of the ‘extreme risk of forest fires’, which served as an obvious hint the firework show should have been rescheduled.
