Two people, a sailor and a civilian, were killed in a shooting on a U.S. Navy destroyer at the Virginia naval base in Norfolk on Monday March 24.

The USS Mahan guided-missile destroyer was docked at Virginia base's Pier 1.

At around 11:20 p.m. a civilian, who according to CNN was unarmed, boarded the destroyer.

According to Capt. Robert Clark, who was quoted by CNN, the civilian had credentials to be at the base and the pier, having worked at the installation before.

While he was approaching the ship's quarterdeck he was confronted by sailors working security. The man started a struggle with the sailors and managed to disarm one of them. He then used the gun to shoot another sailor who had come to help, killing him, the Washington Post reported.

Naval Security Forces responded by opening fire and killing the attacker.

According to Reuters, Naval Station Norfolk was briefly locked down after the shooting.

An investigation is ongoing to determine the base's security procedures and if the civilian had authorization to access the destroyer.

The base is one of the largest naval installations in the world, the Washington Post reported. It is the home port for 64 ships and a Navy hospital ship. About 46,000 military members and 21,000 civilian employees and contractors are assigned there.
