North Korea test-fired two mid-range ballistic missiles into the sea early on Wednesday, as President Obama met with leaders of South Korea and Japan at nuclear summit in the Netherlands to discuss North Korea's arms program, according to a report by Reuters.
The latest in a series of missile launches conducted over the past two months, the two medium-range Nodong missiles were fired from Suckon region just north of Pyongyang at 2:35 a.m. and 2:45 a.m where they flew for about 650 km before dropping into the sea off the Korean Peninsula. This was the first time Nodong missiles were fired since 2009.
The missile, with an effective range of 1000 km, is capable of hitting Japan, Russia, and China. The South Korean Defence Ministry described the recent firing as a "grave provocation" in a recent statement.
North Korea has conducted three nuclear tests and is currently developing a three-stage missile that could reach parts of the U.S.
Ballistic missile launches by Pyongyang are banned by the United Nations.
"We are closely co-ordinating with our allies and partners, including in the UN Security Council, to take the appropriate measures in response to this latest provocation and to address the threat to global security posed by the DPRK's [North Korea's] nuclear and ballistic missile programmes," U.S. State Department deputy spokeswoman Marie Harf said in a statement.
Pyongyang said these latest missiles were fired "mindful of neighboring countries' reaction", and that its tests are self-defence exercises.
