Pirates in the Strait of Malacca robbed a Japanese oil tanker and kidnapped three of its crew members on Tuesday.

According to the New Straits Times, the tanker, carrying 18 crew members and 5 million litres of diesel oil, was sailing from Singapore to Myanmar.

The incident happened at around 1am as the tanker was positioned 21.8 nautical miles off the Malaysian town of Tanjung Karang.

Armed with two handguns and several parangs, the pirates approached the tanker on a speedboat, climbing aboard the vessel and taking the crew hostage, the Star Online reported.

The crew was comprised Indonesian, Thai, Myanmar and Indian nationals.

Three of them, from Indonesia, were taken hostage while the others were tied up and locked in a room.

The pirates then pumped 3 million litres of oil into two tankers and 5 or 6 hours later fled the scene, the Star Online reported.

The locked up crew members managed to free themselves several hours after the incident.

It was then they discovered that three Indonesian crew members were kidnapped.

The ship is now at anchor and an investigation is underway.
