A Vietnamese man arrested near the line of control in Kashmir was held for months by Pakistani authorities because they were unable to understand him.

Vu Gia Po was wandering on foot near the line of control, a heavily militarised zone that separates Pakistani administered Kashmir and Indian administered Kashmir, when he was arrested by Pakistani soldiers.

A Vietnamese government spokesman in Hanoi said Po was detained around October 2013 and held for months because apparently no one could understand his language.

According to the Express Tribune, local administration officials were eventually able to identify the man by his reaction after he was shown the flag and currency of Vietnam among other from several East Asian countries.

In a video posted by Vietnam's Thanh Nien newspaper, Po explains his story in the minority Hmong language: "I was on a working tour in China," he said. "On the way back, I was arrested by Pakistani soldiers for three months. Please bring me back to Vietnam so I can be with my wife, children and family.

"I am not Chinese. I cannot be on Chinese soil. I want to return to Vietnam. I will pay whatever the price is."

According to the video, Po was brought to China by two people named "Vu" and "Phinh" but it is unclear who they are and what is their involvement in the incident.

Po is now waiting to be repatriated from Kashmir to northern Vietnam.

According to the Global Post, Hmong is spoken by an estimated three million people worldwide, primarily in southwestern China, northern Vietnam and Laos.
