Many teens are applying Burt’s Bees Natural Beeswax lip balm to their eye area for a buzzed feeling, leading medical experts to issue a warning about possible side effects.
Many teenagers are taking part in a new, troubling trend. It involves the application of Burt’s Bees Natural Beeswax lip balm.
The teens are reportedly spreading a layer of the waxy balm to their eyelids. The process is being called ‘beezin’ and the purpose of it is to get a buzzed or high feeling.
Medical experts are now warning parents about the trend and also making it known that there are side effects to it.
"We dug deeper and doctors say beezin can cause inflammation of the eye and swelling, it can spread
herpes virus to the eye, it can create symptoms similar to pink eye." [WPTV]
Clinical director at Today Clinic in Oklahoma City, Dr. Brett Cauthen chronicled the potential dangers stating “It’s the peppermint oil that’s causing the burning sensation, and I suppose some people think that is kind of funny….. The peppermint oil in the lip balm is a very strong irritant and can cause inflammation in the eye redness of the eye swelling.”
‘Beezin’ has become a viral trend on social media, adding to the curiosity among teens and the urge to try it. Given that the lip balm is extremely easy to acquire, parents are being asked to keep a close watch on how their children are using the product.
