The remains of the McStay family were discovered in a remote desert area of San Bernardino County, California nearly four years after they disappeared from their home in San Diego County.

Footage captured by a neighbor's surveillance camera in Fallbrook, California, showed Joseph and Summer McStay leaving their newly purchased home with their two toddler boys, Gianni and Joseph Jr., on the evening of February 4, 2010.

The family's 1996 Isuzu Trooper was towed four days later from a parking lot in San Ysidro, just north of the Mexican border.

The police conducted a welfare check at the McStay home on February 10 but did not enter their house. Three days later Joseph McStay's brother broke into the house and found half-eaten popcorn and the family's two dogs left behind, suggesting that the family left in a hurry.

Multiple sightings of the McStays have been reported in both Mexico and around their home in Fallbrook since their disappearance in 2010.

The family's skeletal remains were discovered nearly four years later by a motorcyclist riding through the San Bernardino desert near Victorville. Joseph and Summer's identity have been confirmed through dental records.

Investigators believe that the family was pursued by loan collection services for debts to the IRS and clients of Joseph McStay's business, which installed water fountains.
