Ukraine’s acting president has called for the relaunch of operations against armed pro-Russian activists after several bodies including a local politician from his own party were found near Slovyansk bearing signs of what he called “brutal torture”.

The politician had recently been abducted by unidentified armed men, who have taken control of the city.

President Oleksander Turchinov said “Crimes are being carried out with the full support and indulgence of the Russian Federation. I call on the security agencies to relaunch and carry out effective anti-terrorist measures, with the aim of protecting Ukrainian citizens living in eastern Ukraine from terrorists”.
