Grief and prayers for ferry victims

For days many of those waiting for news of loved ones missing in the South Korea ferry disaster have clung to the hope they might still be alive.

By Sunday it was becoming evident that hope was gone.

Mourners attended funerals for some of the casualties of Danwon High School whose students and staff formed the majority of those on board when the ferry capsized.

They included 18-year-old Jang Jin-Yong whose coffin was carried by his schoolmates.

Also teacher Nam Yun-Chul, hailed a hero by survivors who said he'd gone to find his students as the ship turned over.

By late Sunday afternoon at least 56 people had been confirmed dead.

Another 246 were still unaccounted for.

As South Korea faced its worst maritime disaster in 21 years, nearly 15, 000 worshippers turned out to mark Easter Sunday with prayers for the missing.

The captain and two crew have been arrested on charges including negligence of duty.
