A Romeoville police officer shot a man and another officer was injured Thursday night while attempting to stop three Joliet men suspected of shoplifting at a local Kohl's store.

Police were notified by store security about the shoplifters at about 10:10pm Thursday, according to a Romeoville police statement. Two police officers arrived at the scene and were waiting for the suspects outside the store. The officers saw two suspects bringing a shopping cart out of the store towards a Pontiac Sunfire in the parking lot, police and witnesses said.
51-year-old Robert Russell tried to flee after being approached. One of the officers chased Russell, who had jumped into the passenger seat of a Pontiac Sunfire driven by 52-year-old Charles Hinch. After the officer caught up to the car, he tried to arrest Russell, but Russell closed the car doon on the officer's arm. The driver then started to pull away dragging the officer along.

The other police officer ordered the driver to stop, but the car kept moving. The backup officer then fired three of four shots into the car, hitting the driver in the left arm, police said.

The officer that was dragged was taken to Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital in Bolingbrook and released with non-life threatening injuries, police said.

Russell and Hinch were both arrested along with 28-year-old Gerald Chamberlain, who was still in the store. Charges are pending against all three men.

The officer that fired at the car will be on station duty during the investigation of the incident, said Romeoville Police Chief Mark Turvey.
