High school softball team coach fired after burning students' ears with a lighter

The coach of a Japanese high school's female softball team was fired after parents were made aware of the extreme corporal punishment he administered, which included burning the ears of players.

The 44-year-old coach, who also held other roles of responsibility at the Kashima Gakuen high school in Ibaraki Prefecture, reportedly reprimanded his players by hitting them with a whiteboard and the base of his baseball bat during the practice games.

In one alleged incident, he approached three team members who were napping during a bus ride and burned their ears using a lighter. One of the girls suffered minor burns.

The coach's methods of corporal punishment received exposure after the victim's parents filed complaints to the school.

The coach was given the boot in mid-September and the school has since put the students through mental care treatment.
