A Turkish gunman stormed a government building in the eastern province of Kars, killing six workers before committing suicide on Wednesday (March 19), according to a Wall Street Journal report.

Veysi Erim attacked the Turkish Statistical Institute in Kars where he worked as a state-employed sociologist. Erim took six employees, including regional manager Mehmet Tolon, hostage, and killed them as police and snipers surrounded the building. Police negotiations with the gunman were cut short when Erim put the weapon to his head. Seven people, including the gunman, were killed, and two others were injured.

"This incident is not a terrorist attack," said Kars Governor Eyup Tepe to reporters. He clarified the incident simply represented "an employee issue by a psychologically troubled person."

The 33-year-old Veysi's promotions had been halted due his continued absence from work. Veysi was still employed at the time of the attack.
