It is widely believed that media had a significant part to play in the Rwandan genocide. There is also little doubt that its legacy continues to exert a strong influence on the country's media scene that has only one private television station so far. This has been the reason why until recently private media was almost unheard of in Rwanda, where the country's only private television channel continue to struggle a year into its establishment.
