Four bomb blasts struck Thai towns near the Malaysian border on Sunday (December 22). Two Thais were killed and more than 22 other people, including Malays and other tourists, were injured.

Two separate bombs placed on motorbikes exploded in front of police stations in Padang Besar and Sadao between 10:30 and 10:40 a.m. The blast at Padang Besar destroyed five motorbikes. No one was reported injured in the explosions.

A third explosion took place in front of the Oliver Hotel in Danok. A car bomb was placed in a car parked in front of the building, and was remotely activated by a digital watch. This blast destroyed part of the hotel and other vehicles in the vicinity. Two Thais were killed, and more than 22 other people, including Malays and other tourists were injured.

A fourth bomb exploded in front of a shop on the Thai side of Bukit kayu Hitam.

Tourists rushed out of town after the incident, causing a 1.5km traffic jam out of Danok.

Thai police are still investigating the motivation behind the attacks in a region that rarely sees violence, Major-General Noppadol Pueksomon said in a Star report.

"The bombings were similar to the one in Haadyai at the Lee Gardens Plaza Hotel on March 31 last year where three people, including two Malaysians, were killed," Pueksomon said.

More than 5,000 people were killed in three Muslim-dominated provinces in southern Thailand since an Islamic insurgency broke out in 2004.
