Three Syrian doctors and three Somali colleagues were shot dead near Somalia's capital Mogadishu on Wednesday (December 18) while en route to provide medical assistance at a local hospital.

According to AFP, the attack took place on a road leading from the capital Mogadishu to Afgoye, a town some 30 km northwest of the capital. The report said gunmen dressed in military uniforms ambushed the medical convoy by shooting indiscriminately at the vehicle before escaping from the scene.

Three Syrian doctors, one Somali doctor and their Somali driver and guard were killed. Another Syrian and Somali doctor were seriously wounded. Somali authorities claim that al-Shabab insurgents were responsible for the attack.

Al-Shabab insurgents have been driven out of Somalia's major towns and cities by pro-government forces and a UN-mandated African union force in the last two years. However, the group still controls many towns and rural areas of southern Somalia.
