An engineer from Austria, Stefan Klein, has invented a vehicle that can deploy wings and takeoff into the air. The Aeromobil 2.5, which is made of a steel framework and carbon coating, measures 6,000 mm long and 1,600 wide, with the wingspan of the vehicle measuring 8,200 mm across. On the ground, the vehicle's top speed is 160 km/h, and can travel a distance of 500 km, which equals roughly 1,250 times around an Olympic race track. To take off, the vehicle must reach at least 130km/h, and it is able to reach speeds of 200 km/h and travel a distance of 700 km, or roughly 1,750 times around an Olympic race track.
The vehicle, whihc can seat up to two people, and weighs roughly 1,000 pounds and requires at least 100 horsepower to carry enough fuel to fly 100 mph up to 500 miles. These are the minimal standards required for a licensing of a light sport craft.
Travel by air would still be limited to airports, however, Klein hopes to put the vehicle into larger production and bring the technology to a larger market.
