A burglary suspect swallowed a pair of necklaces he stole from a Florida residence hoping they would remain undetected. And they were, that is until he had to undergo an X-ray before being booked into county jail.
Suspect Joseph Ramos, 21, was arrested last Wednesday after being stopped by police for reckless driving. Authorities discovered that Ramos was driving a vehicle that had been reported stolen in a December 10 burglary of a Safety Harbor house. According to an affidavit, Ramos had broken into the house earlier in the day and stolen a vehicle from the residence.
When Ramos was being processed into the Pinellas County lockup, jail personnel looking at an X-ray photo noticed "a large dark mass near the suspect's stomach area." Upon more investigation, the objects "was identified as necklaces that the suspect had swallowed prior to entering the jail."
Ramos then admitted to gulping down the two necklaces. He was then moved to a local hospital, where he had surgery to take out the jewelry from his stomach. Interesting that the cops were in such a hurry. Why didn't they just let nature take its course? The stolen necklaces were later identified by the burglary victim, investigators said.
Ramos was charged with felony burglary and tampering with physical evidence.
The sheriff's department said a RAD PRO SecurPass Whole Body X-Ray Scanner was put in the Pinellas jail six months earlier. It is made to detect contraband. The scanner can spot metals, pills, plastics, drugs, and other unusually shaped items that may be concealed on the inmate's person.
