A 14-year-old Colorado Springs girl mistaken for a burglar was shot and killed by her stepfather Monday morning at their home, Colorado Springs police said.
The shooting took place at a home in the 4000 block of Ascendant Drive, close to North Carefree Circle and Peterson Road in northeast Colorado Springs.
According to a statement from police, authorities were first called to the home to investigate a burglary just before 6am on Monday, Dec. 23, 2013. The caller told emergency dispatchers that the burglar had been shot. Once on the scene police discovered the 14-year-old girl in the basement with gunshot wounds to the chest and stomach. Scanner traffic suggests that the teenager was coming in through a window.
The girl was was taken to a local area hospital where she died from gunshot wounds.
Jani Harvey, a neighbor who lives across the street from the family, said she heard the gunshots early Monday morning. "I heard three bangs," said Harvey. "I assumed it was someone hitting on a car or a garage door or something like that." The neighbor said the noise was startling. "I thought it was strange, and I thought it was an odd hour for it to be going on. It's kind of a quiet neighborhood," said Harvey.
The names of the 14-year-old girl and her stepfather will not be released by authorities, citing an ongoing investigation, police spokesman Larry Herbert said. No arrests have been made. Herbert said the District Attorney's office will release any findings or updates.
