A retired nurse may have saved the life of a 54-year-old Detroit man who was beaten unconscious by a violent mob.
Steve Utash was driving his pickup on April 2 when he accidentally hit 10-year-old David Harris. A crowd gathered around the screaming boy and when Utash stopped to help, several young men turned on the man, robbing him of his wallet and brutally attacking him.
Deborah Hughes, who lives across the street from the scene, heard the accident and jumped to her window to see what happened. She grabbed her handgun for protection, then rushed to Utash's aid. She pushed through the mob and threw herself onto Utash's body, preventing further assault. She then waited with the then unconscious man until emergency services arrived.
Utash remains in a medically-induced coma, though his family reports that he is slowly improving. Five people have been charged in connection with the attack, which is believed to have been in part racially-motivated. Utash is white and Harris, as well as the attackers, are black.
