Shooting spree: France police are on the hunt for a gunman who opened fire at the Liberation daily newspaper's office and at a Societe Generale building on Monday morning in Paris (November 18).

According to authorities, the suspect is a 5-foot-6-inch to 5-foot-8-inch tall man with a "European appearance" and with graying hair. He was estimated to be between 35 and 45 years old and was wearing a khaki parka or a green pullover, a dark sleeveless vest, green and white basketball shoes, two bags and a dark cap. He was also carrying a sling bag, with at least one report claiming it was filled with grenades.

The gunman burst into the office of the Liberation daily in central Paris on Monday morning, firing shots before fleeing. A 27-year-old photographer's assistant was hit in the chest, close to the heart, and is currently in critical condition.

Roughly an hour and a half later, the gunman appeared at the suburban headquarters of Societe Generale in the La Defense business district, about 10 km (6 miles) west of the center. There, he fired shots into the lobby of the building, shattering a window, but about a dozen or so workers nearby were unharmed.

Someone reported later that their car was hijacked by the same gunman, who forced the driver to drop him off at Champs-Elysees before fleeing on foot.

What is thought to be the same gunman threatened employees the offices of 24-hour news channel BFMTV last Friday. Investigators have found two types of 12-gauge shotgun cartridges both at the Liberation offices and in BFMTV's lobby. Officials are testing the shells for possible DNA evidence.

The suspect's motive is unknown. Police have handed out photographs in the hopes the public will help track him down.
