At least 42 African migrants drowned when their boat capsized off the coast of southern Yemen late on Sunday (March 9).
The boat overturned off the coast of Bir Ali in southern Shabwa province. A Yemeni navy patrol rescued at least 30 migrants who were later taken to a refugee camp in the town of Mayfaa.
African migrants— mainly Ethiopians and Somalis— enter Yemen by boat before crossing into Saudi and other wealthier Gulf countries. Hundreds have died at sea. Some 84,000 migrants from Horn Africa have passed through Yemen in 2012.
