A 30 year old male teacher at a junior high school in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, is accused of sexually harassing a male student. He first expressed his feelings of affection to the student through the popular phone messaging service "Line".
The teacher then tried to kiss and hug the student during PE class. The harassment allegedly happened several times a week; sometimes lasting for as long as 50 minutes. Reports claim the teacher even tried to french-kiss the student at one point.
The story came to light after the student's mom discovered the harassment after finding flirtatious messages on her son's phone this April and reported it to the school.
However, the teacher claimed that he was simply trying to correct the student's inappropriate way of handling a relationship with another female student. He said that French kissing was part of a game to establish "mutual trust".
After a thorough investigation however, the school's gender equality committee determined that the teacher has sexually harassed the student and condemned him for trying to mislead the investigation. The teacher was subsequently fired in September.
The Kaohsiung City Government's Education Bureau has officially listed the teacher as "unsuitable for hiring" in its computer database system to stop him from being hired ever again. According to an interview with Apple Daily Taiwan, Chang Ping, the director of the Humanistic Education Foundation's Southern office, said the incident is a typical case of teacher abusing his power and taking advantage of the student.
Chang urged the parents to apply for compensation according to the state compensation law.
