A Border Patrol agent was able to track a suspected truck thief's footprints to a trailer in the Campo area, where he was arrested on Saturday, authorities said.
A sheriff's deputy was behind a Ford pickup on Interstate 8 near Crestwood Road. After running the license-plate the deputy's reading device signaled that the vehicle was listed as stolen, sheriff's Lt. Rich Williams said.
The deputy attempted to pull over the driver around noon, but the driver sped away, exited the freeway and headed south on winding, dirt Church Road, Lt. Williams said.
Other deputies, Border Patrols agents and helicopters from both agencies teamed up in a search for the pickup. A Border Patrol agent located the vehicle off Church Road near state Route 94.
An agent followed footprints leading from the pickup to a trailer located nearby. The man inside, Nick Jorgensen, 35, of San Diego, was arrested on suspicion of auto theft and three warrants, including one for auto theft, Williams said.
