I ask the specific question in the title because if you are a weekend warrior or only need base layers a few times a year, it makes sense that you look into the Coldpruf base layer lines. These are comfortable and good feature holding base layers that are extremely affordable. While they have synthetic layers available, Tyson and I were drawn to the new 100% Merino Wool Classic Line.
The Classic Line by Coldpruf is rated to perform in cold to very cold temperatures and medium to high activity. The layers are not the ‘to die for’ soft merino wool layers that one may looking for. They have a little bit of a synthetic feel (which some of you may really like) however perform as merino. Odor control, moisture control, and warmth are a few features that shine through this base layer. For backcountry skiing, this base layer fits the bill.
These lightweight layers won’t break the bank. They’re affordable and comfortable and are perfect for those of you who ski a few times of year or find yourself on a tight budget. Merino base layers are expensive but I find perform better than any synthetic fabrics so are worth the money. If you’re not constantly in cold environments doing high-energy activities, then Coldpruf is a great company for you to look in to. They have lots of different fabric blends and styles so there’s sure to be something for you!
