One person was killed and two were injured when a twin-engine Canadair CL-600 crash landed at Aspen/Pitkin County Airport in Colorado on Sunday (January 5), according to Colorado Springs' The Gazette.
The Gazette reported that the aircraft departed from Tucson, Arizona sometime after 10:00 a.m. and crashed at the Aspen airport at 12:22 p.m. The plane reportedly came to rest upside down on runway 15, and a fire erupted immediately after. Eyewitnesses said a firetruck was on scene soon after the crash.
According to Alex Burchetta, director of operations for the Pitkin County Sheriff's Office, the deceased man was Sergio Carranza Brabata of Mexico. The names of the two injured were not released, although they were also identified as Mexican men. One of the wounded suffered serious injuries while the other only experienced moderate injuries.
Peter Knudson, a spokesman for the National Transportation Safety Board, said the aircraft is registered to the Bank of Utah in Salt Lake City, according to Federal Aviation Administration records.
The airport was closed after the crash, with all incoming and outgoing flights cancelled.
