A Detroit man is fighting to live after a mob attacked him just after he stopped to help a 10-year-old he accidentally hit with his pickup truck on Wednesday.
Steve Utash, 54-year-old tree trimmer, was driving west on Morang Drive when he struck David Harris. Harris had been standing on the edge of the street in front of a gas station with three other boys, waiting to cross, when he walked into the path of Utash's pickup.
Utash, who did not appear to be speeding, stopped his vehicle to render aid. According to reports, Harris screamed, drawing a crowd of about 30 people. Several young men robbed Harris, then savagely beat him, leaving him unconscious with multiple head injuries.
Two teenagers have been arrested for the assault, while police suspect four others might also have been involved in the beating. Some are calling the attack a hate crime, as Utash is white and the boy, as well as his attackers are black, though Detroit police have announced the incident will not be classified as such.
Harris did not suffer any broken bones and was released from hospital the day after the accident. Utash, on the other hand has been put into an induced coma and may face months of recovery, if and when he wakes up.
Utash is uninsured and a campaign has been started to raise funds for his medical expenses. So far, more than $105,000 dollars has been collected.
