Drug lord Nazario Moreno Gonzalez, known as El Mas Loco - The Craziest One, was killed in Mexico's Michoacan state on Sunday morning (March 9).
Moreno, 43, was the founder of the La Familia cartel, which dominated the drugs trade in Michoacan.
Mexican federal police claimed to have killed Moreno in 2010 when they surrounded
El Alcalde town and started a gun battle that lasted for two days. Moreno's corpse was not recovered, but he was declared dead.
According to the BBC, since then, Moreno had been reportedly seen alive.
According to USA Today, during 2010 and 2014, La Familia morphed into the Knights Templar, a powerful cartel cited by U.S. law enforcement officials as a major source of methamphetamine in the United States.
On Sunday, March 9 2014, Moreno was stopped by Mexican marines in the village of Tumbiscatio. When he was asked to turn, he opened fired instead. Marines fired back and killed him. His identity has now been confirmed by fingerprints.
The BBC reported that Moreno's killing is a second major success for the government's campaign against the drugs trade within a month.
Michoacan, also known as the 'tierra caliente,' has been a hotspot for drug cartel activity in recent months.
