Monday’s headlines in Hungary reflect the electoral triumph of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, seen as an authoritarian troublemaker by critics on the outside but a champion of national interests for many at home.
Rejoicing at his re-election on Sunday, one man in Budapest told euronews: “Hungary is going the right way.”
Another man in the capital argued that the left did not put up a decent fight.
“The left-wing were stupid,” he said.
“They started their campaign too late.”
A young man who spoke to us said he was expecting far-right Jobbik to win “not Fidesz, after they brought the whole country to bankruptcy over the last four years.”
Many in Budapest, however, preferred not to talk on camera. Our reporter Andrea Hajagos says some Hungarians are wary of exposing their political views in case it creates trouble at work or at home with family members and friends.
Orbán’s Fidesz has clearly won a big victory but she says “just a few votes could determine whether it will be able to continue to govern with a two-thirds majority. If not, the opposition might have a greater say in politics.Things will become clearer within the space of a few days.”
