Chinese director Zhang Yimou and his wife, Chen Ting, admitted breaching the country's population control policy in an interview with the state news agency on Sunday. He and his wife gave birth to two sons and a girl respectively in 2001, 2004, and 2006, before their marriage in 2011. Zhang, however, denied rumors about celebrities like him dodging the penalty. He reiterated that he has never been granted any privilege by the family planning authority, and would cooperate with the bureau's investigation. Zhang faces a fine of $1.2 Million, the highest ever reported for such a case in China.
