At least 11 people died in an attack targeted at a district court complex in Islamabad, Pakistan on Monday.

There are conflicting reports about the number of gunmen who took part in the attack. Eyewitnesses told the Express Tribune that there were six to seven gunmen. They arrived in a white Prado and burst into the district court complex, which is near a busy market and several government offices.

According to the BBC, the attackers opened fire in the area where judges' chambers and lawyers' offices are located. The gunfire led to a panicked stampede as people were running for cover.

After rounds of gunfire, two assailants detonated explosive vests after they were surrounded by police.

The attack led to 11 deaths and 25 injuries. It was reported that a judge and several lawyers were killed, while five were critically wounded.

The identities of the attackers and their motives remain unclear. The Pakistani Taliban denied any involvement. "We have already declared a ceasefire for a month and we stand by our promise," a Taliban spokesman said. "Our colleagues in the movement also cannot violate this agreement."

The attack was the first suicide attack in the Pakistani capital since June 2011.
