North Korea fired seven shots from multiple rocket launchers into the sea off its eastern coast on Tuesday.

The Yonhap Agency reported that three short-range projectiles were launched from a 240 mm multiple rocket launcher at around 6:00 a.m. The first shots were fired from Wonsan and flew 55 kilometres in a northeast direction before falling into the Sea of Japan.

Four more shots were launched near Wonsan at around 4:17 p.m. It is believed they used a different multiple rocket launcher, and the shots flew about 155 kilometres.

"North Korea is believed to have tested two different types of MLRS," a spokesman of South Korea's defence ministry told AFP. The Korea Times reported that the ministry speculated that a new KN-09 launcher, which can fire 300-milimetre rockets with a maximum range of about 180 kilometres. The KN-09 launcher is considered a menacing threat to South Korea and U.S. bases in Pyeongtaek and Osan, which are just some 160 kilometres away from the demilitarised zone.

South Korea denounces the launch as "reckless provocation". While the relation between the North and the South has seen improvement recently, North Korea views the military drills by the United States and South Korea as preludes to military offensives.

North Korea has test-fired missiles twice over the last two weeks.
