Dusty roads can be a big problem, creating low visibility for drivers and unpleasant environments for those living nearby.
At the same time, paving them can be expensive and thus cost-prohibitive for some communities.
Mark Hryniuk who works for Prairie Energy in Saskatchewan, Canada has come up with a solution. He’s having the ones in his area coated with used canola oil.
He said he came up with the idea one day while driving home.
Sure enough, his plan is working.
Now, vats of the stuff are purchased from restaurants, put in the appropriate application containers, and then spread along the provinces unfinished roadways.
It turns out that buying the oil used isn’t only great for the budget, it’s got more tack, which is better for his purposes.
Said the man of the technique overall, "It basically penetrates about an inch and a half. As you drive on it, it gets harder and harder. And it looks like poor man's pavement. We've done complete villages already."
He does admit that after the applications there is a lingering smell of French fries, but it goes away in a few days.
