Boeing officially launched the latest model of its 777 jets at the Dubai Airshow in mid-November.
With a 71.1-m wingspan, the Boeing 777X is the largest twin-engine jet in the world. Its long, tapered wings are designed to make flying more efficient.
The 777X's engines, manufactured by General Motors, are more fuel-efficient than previous models of the 777. Boeing claims that fuel consumption is 12 percent less than that of the 777's major competitor, the Airbus A350-1000.
There are two Boeing 777X models, the 777-8X and the 777-9X. The jets can accommodate 350 and 400 passengers, respectively.
The Boeing 777-8X is in direct competition with the Airbus A350-1000. The former has a range of 17,220 km, while the latter 14,816 km.
Production will begin in 2017. The first batch of airplanes will be delivered in 2020. Boeing has already received 259 orders from Lufthansa, Qatar Airways, Etihad Airways and Emirates.
Plans to build Boeing 777X airplanes in Washington state fell through after the company and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers failed to agree on retirement benefits. Boeing said it would "look very broadly" for a construction base.
