Four people were killed and more than 60 were injured, including the train operator, after a Metro-North train derailed in the Bronx, New York on Sunday morning (December 1). One official said it appeared that three of the four people who were killed were ejected from the train, although the information has not been confirmed by the fire department.

The Metro-North train was heading toward Manhattan's Grand Central Terminal when it derailed at a sharp curve about 100 yards (metres) north of the Spuyten Duyvil station at 7:20 a.m. The train was about half full and carrying 150 passengers. At least one rail car toppled over near the water, while others ended up on their sides.

Rescue crews used jacks and airbags to free survivors from the wreckage.

Officials are still investigating the cause of the derailment. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said the sharp curve near Spuyten Duyvil station is a dangerous area just by design. Metro-North spokeswoman Marjorie Anders told Reuters that in July of this year, 10 cars of a freight train carrying trash derailed in the same area.
