At least 24 people were wounded in a bomb attack at the Cotabato Foundation College of Science and Technology in the agricultural town of Arakan on Mindanao Island in the Philippines late Sunday night (January 12).

Firefighters and police were putting out a fire set off at the campus security bunkhouse when an improvised explosive device was thrown at a fire truck, causing a blast that injured at least 24 people.

"The fire drew responders, including firemen, teachers, and students, and they were among the injured," Senior Inspector Rolly Oranza of the local police force said in an AFP report. Seventeen of the injured were in critical condition.

Investigators have not yet identified an attacker and are still trying to determine whether the fire was set to lure in authorities before the explosion, Oranza said.

In September 2013 Arakan police identified and defused a bomb planted near the school's flagpole, Oranza said.

Mindanao is mostly populated by indigenous tribes. Although Islamist rebels are not known to operate in Arakan, a farming community of 45,000 people, an Islamist insurgency throughout Mindanao has killed more than 150,000 people.
