New powerful earthquake strikes Chile

A strong earthquake has struck northern Chile again a day after another huge tremor killed six people.

The 7.6 magnitude quake was the strongest of several aftershocks; however there are no reports of any injuries or damage.

The bigger earthquake on Turesday triggered a tsunami with two metre waves.

President Michelle Bachelet, who had gone to the area to inspect the damage from the earlier quake, was evacuated from her hotel in the city of Arica.

Bachelet, who was sworn in as president less than a month ago, is conscious of the stinging criticism she faced near the end of her first term in office in 2010.

Her government then was widely seen to have responded inadequately to a massive 8.8-magnitude quake and tsunami that killed 526 people.
