Governor of Sindh, Dr. Ishrat ul Ebad Khan has sought stringent implementation of legislation to ensure absolute abolition of blood banks functioning illegally in the province.

Chairing a meeting of Sindh Safe Blood Transfusion Authority he urged medical and legal experts to join hands in the crusade against criminals playing havoc with the lives of unassuming and resource-less citizens under garb of (presumably) a human cause.

The Governor said that it was in 2005 that Safe Blood Transfusion Blood Bill was adopted to curb professional blood donation but its implementation has emerged as a serious challenge.

He said public awareness must be raised along with multiple check and foolproof monitoring of all blood banks in different health facilities as well as in individual capacities.

"This will help filtering as well as identifying elements involved in the heinous crime of selling blood that too is contaminated or infected," he said.

Dr. Ishrat ul Ebad Khan ordered the officials including medical superintendents of government hospitals to ensure that no blood transfusion is administered without the prescription of the doctors themselves.

He said unwarranted blood transfusion has emerged to be a major contributory factor for promotion of criminal activities undertaken by unscrupulous people at the cost of precious human lives.

Commissioner of Karachi, Shoaib Ahmad Siddiqui present on the occasion suggested necessary modification in the Act under which those crime be declared non bail able and culprits be offered no concession.

The meeting among others was attended by Principal Secretary to the Governor, Mohammad Hussein Syed and Dr. Zahid Ansari of Sindh Blood Transfusion Authority besides senior police officials, legal and medical experts.
