A car bomb explosion hit a hospital in the Syrian town of Atmeh, close to the border with Turkey, on Sunday (February 23), killing 16 people.

According to Reuters, the attack took place near the Orient Hospital field hospital, which is owned by Ghassan Aboud, a Gulf-based businessman who runs Orient Television. Orient TV reported that 16 people were killed and 65 others were wounded by the blast, including medics and patients.

According to AFP, the car bomb exploded in the car park near the hospital. Parts of the hospital collapsed and surrounding cars and homes were also affected by the bomb, Al Jazeera America reported. The victims were rushed to another hospital in Atmeh.

It was not clear who was behind the attack but it is suspected that the militant group, Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL) was responsible.
