Sinkholes can be a dangerous problem for both humans and animals. A deaf and blind dog in Frederick, Maryland is now safe and sound after rescuers pulled her out of a sinkhole.
The life saving efforts kicked off after a homeowner contacted authorities to tell them the 14-year-old dog named Samantha had fallen into the hole, which had opened up overnight.
Public works crews, firefighters, police and animal control officers responded to the scene. The pooch could not be seen from the surface. For six full hours, the rescuers tried different approaches to pulling Samantha out safely.
They blew warm air into the opening to prevent the canine from getting hypothermia. The crews then dug by hand for awhile before enlisting the help of heavy equipment operators to finish the job of excavating the sinkhole which measured roughly 3 feet by 12 feet deep.
Eventually, they were able to slip a rope around Samantha and pull her out of harms way. Samantha was taken to a local animal hospital for an evaluation but is said to be perfectly fine.
