I shared another wonderful version of this song before (http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xmcrkq_the-rollickers-ready-for-the-river_music) but this rendition is stylistically so different it is well worth comparing. Although almost forgotten today, the Emerson Gill Orchestra was Cleveland's most popular dance band of the '20s. During the 1920s, Gill and his orchestra recorded at least 21 songs for Okeh and Columbia. This great side was cut in 1928. As far as known, further presonnel included, besides leader Gill, also playing the violin: Nat Natoli (t); Hugh Sellers (tb); Ray Putnam and Menden Fraye (cl as); Jim Harry (cl, ts); Pierre Oksr (bb), as well as Floyd St. Clair (d). Vocal by Pinkey Hunter.
