Tens of thousands of people have lined the streets of Madrid, joining politicians of all persuasions, to say a final farewell to former Prime Minister Adolfo Suarez.
Regarded as one of the founding fathers of Spain, he died aged 81 on Sunday after a long illness.
Spontaneous applause echoed in the air during the procession.
It was the last of three days of official mourning across the country. Along with government ministers were members of the opposition including Socialist leader Alfredo Rubalcaba.
The procession made its way to Cibeles Square, one of Madrid’s most iconic sites, where there was a short military service.
The coffin of Adolfo Suarez, who was his country’s first prime minister after the 36-year dictatorship of General Franco, was then taken to his home city of Avila for a private funeral.
