Belgium: Amnesty International protests against US human rights violations

Amnesty protesters were dressed in orange jumpsuits – as worn by detainees at the Guantanamo detention centre – when they demonstrated in Brussels on Tuesday.

They want European leaders to talk about the plight of prisoners at Guantanamo, the US death penalty and the use of drones with the US president while he is in town.

President Barack Obama was set to arrive in Belgium on Tuesday evening for EU and NATO summits on Wednesday.

Philippe Hensmans, Director of Amnesty International, Belgium explained: “Even if Mr. Obama has promised once again to be more transparent in the use of drones, unfortunately it is still going on, they are still killing civilians.”

The US has defended its use of the unmanned assault aircraft, but drone strikes have killed many civilians, leaving communities shattered and families devastated.
