It's always wise to be very aware of your surroundings when taking selfies. An unidentified student recently learned that the hard way after breaking a 19th century statue.
The bizarre incident unfolded at the Academy of Fine Arts of Brera in Milan, Italy. The male responsible for damaging the statue is reportedly a student.
According to witnesses, he climbed up on the sculpture to take a picture of himself. In the process of doing so, he broke the statue’s leg right off.
Staffers at the museum located the shattered pieces of it on the floor. The broken statue is somewhat fortunately a copy of an ancient Greek art piece found 400 years ago that dates back to the Hellenistic era and depicts a manly shaped figure with animal like features who appears to be drunkenly passed out. The title of the sculpture is appropriately deemed ‘Drunken Satyr’. The now broken artwork is situated in the museum’s hallway.
Fortunately for the academy and art lovers all over, the more valuable and recognized pieces are kept in a differing room and the clumsy, selfie-snapping student didn’t have the opportunity to climb on them.
It remains unclear who the male is, but it is known he was initially able to flee from the museum unscathed.
